We hope you’re well, safe, and adhering to the preventive principals prescribed by the top health officials.

The U.S. has now recorded the highest number of cvid-19 cases in the world - more than 4.7 million with over 155,000 deaths - according to John Hopkins University reports. Health authorities and experts have warned of a further worsening in the crisis, with the virus expected to spread at more dangerous speeds particularly in the Midwest, in both, urban and rural areas.

White House cvid-19 coordinator, Dr. Deborah M. Birx, explained on Sunday that the U.S. epidemic has entered a “new phase”- the worst phase so far. The infection is now spreading across the nation faster and wider than in the initial waves. Cases reported in July alone are more than twice the total number reported since the pandemic began.

In July, the country saw more than 1.9 million new cases, which is about 42% of the 4.5 million cases recorded since March.

The new weekly average of daily infections has been around 65,000 over the last two weeks. This is easily more than double the highest weekly averages during spring, which is when the US experienced its very first wave. Commenting on this, Birx said on “State of the Union”, CNN news program,

“What we are seeing today is different from March and April - it is extraordinarily widespread”.

She strongly emphasized the importance of social distancing and mask-wearing. She even went so far as to recommend wearing masks at home for those living with individuals with multiple medical conditions like diabetes or respiratory issues. She said

If you're in multi-generational households, and there's an outbreak in your rural area or in your city, you need to really consider wearing a mask at home”.

The recent high surges in cvid-19 cases have been linked to asymptomatic carriers - patients who don’t experience any symptoms. Due to their lack of symptoms, these carriers/patients are harder to identify and isolate. This, in turn, makes it extremely difficult to trace the infected individuals within communities.

As a result of this phenomenon, we are now seeing what Birx calls “inherent community spread”. That is to say, that the pandemic trend here in the US is such that the infection has taken over whole communities at a time. Such spreads are much more challenging to treat and contain since there are only so many people that can be isolated.

Top health officials including Dr. Anthony Fauci, Dr. Deborah Birx and Adm. Brett Giroir (assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Services) have repeatedly advised the following preventive measures:

  1. Wide-scale mask-wearing
  2. Handwashing
  3. Strict social distancing (avoid all crowded indoor spaces such as restaurants, bars, social gatherings, household parties, etc.)

While Dr. Fauci and Birx have time and again recommended the “universal wearing of masks”, Admiral Giroir has spoken of it as “the single most effective preventive measure”. He insists that the practice of wearing masks and avoiding crowds, is essentially, as beneficial as a “complete shutdown”.

We need to take more precautions now than ever.
